147 named "Michael Airey"
Thursday 20 July 2006

Standard car 147 has been named "Michael Airey" in recognition of Mike's prominent role in returning and restoring this tram to operation on the Blackpool tramway. A private party of family, friends and colleagues were invited to the ceremony on Thursday 20 July which involved a trip to Fleetwood on the tram.

Mike Airey started work for Blackpool Transport in 1990 as manager of the body shop and has been actively involved in the tramcar refurbishment programme. Mike's previous career had involved many years at the Blackpool based coachbuilders, Duple. In 2001, Mike was part of a part team that travelled to Ohio, USA to prepare Standard 147 for its return to England, alongside enthusiasts Chris Pulling and Graham Twidale. Upon return, Mike managed the restoration of the tram which is a credit to all involved in the project.

Unfortunately, ill health has forced Mike to retire from work at Blackpool Transport but it is appropriate that 147 adopts his name in recognition of Mike's contribution to the tram.
